THE CHESS CONGRESS.

Yesterday’s play in the Chess Congress was very interesting, several of the games being amongst the best that have been seen for the championship. In the match between Barnes and Malcolm, the former resigned at the forty-first move. After some good play between Littlejohn and Jowitt, the latter resigned at the fifty-second move, Bakewell in bia match with Trimble won a bishop at the twenty-first move. Play went on until the fifty-sixth moye, when Trimble, finding himself nnable to prevent a pawn being queened, resigned. Ashton and Siedeberg had a long, keen contest, up to luncheon time, when each was left with three or four pawns only. The play was very even in the evening, but Ashton made a slip in bis sealed move, and Siedeberg won. The scores of the competitors for the championship are now as followsSiedeberg, six wins, one drawn, no losses; Littlejohn, five wins, one drawn, no losses; Bakewell, four wins, three draws, no losses; Hookbam, three wins, one draw, four losses; Barnes, three wins, no draws, four losses; Jowitt, two wins, one draw, five losses; Ashton, one win, one draw, five losses; Trimble, no wins, two draws, five losses.

The play for the championship has now resolved itself into a contest between SledsBerg and Littlejohn. With regard to the question as to whether these two platen should be allowed to draw their game of yesterday, tbe Committee have decided that they must play it to a finish,
