GRADUATES' MEETING.

A meeting of graduates of the University of New Zealand, whose names are in the books of tho University of Otago, was beld in the University library at eleven o'olock tijis morning for the purpose of eleoting a gentleman to represent the graduates of the University en fcbs University Council. There were about a doien gentlemen present, and it was stated that over sizty graduates were represented by proxy. Mr A. B. Barclay, the senior graduate present, was elected to preside, and on taking the ohair Mr Barclay expressed his gratification at thje fact that, after all the Üborsand trouble they ba/j Jaken to get a voice in the management of the institution, they had at last been successful. He also referred to the death of Mr James Fulton, a member of the University Council. Mr VV. A. Stout agreed with Mr Barclay that it was a gratifying thing to see that the agitation for their rights had ended In Parliament giving the necessary powers to the graduates to assemble and vote for their own representative. He h&d no doubt, however, they alt deplored that the immediate occasion of their meeting wop the death of suoh a man as Mr Fulton. After enlarging on the deceased gentleman's excellent qualities, bis calm judicial mind, and integrity of purpose, the speaker went on to Bay fbftt it was feared by the opponents of the new measure that the graduates would elect inexperienced and rash members of their own number, and It was therefore the duty of the graduates to show that they recognised their responsibilities. He baa to pro* pose—"That Mr David White, M.A., be plepted to the University Council to represent tiue graduates of the University." After making lengthy refetende to Mr White's eminent qualifications, $r Stout concluded by saying that they were fortunate in having such a capable man as Mr White willing to be nominated for the position. Mr W, D. MiLtfE seconded the motion. Ho other nominations were received, and the ohalrman therefore declared Mr White elected.

A vote of thanks was passed to Mr W. ftutvJ?J£on, M.H.8., and the Hon. Mr Beeves, Mini?ser of Education, for their assistance in piloting tbe Otago University Election Bill through Parliament last session.

Mr Milne moved and Mr Stout seconded a motion expressing appreciation of the services rendered tbe University by the late Mr Fulton. The motion was carried nem, dis. A vigilance committee, consisting of Messrs Barolay, Sidey, Stout, Mouat, and Tennant, was appointed to make arrangements for future meetings, and to draft rules, etc., if necessary. ■- ■
