Maori Hill.— A special meeting of the Maori Hill Council was held on Wednesday night, when there were present—The Mayor (Mr A. Herdraan), Crs Powell, Hill, Thomson, Pilkington, Eossbotbam, Aitken, Lawson, Long, Bain, and Tanner.—Cr Lawson moved—'‘That the town clerk receive two months’ notice of dismissal.” In speaking to the motion, he said that the matter had been before them now for a long time, and he wonld be pleased if it could be satisfactorily disposed of that evening, though he baldly expected that such would be the case. Caversham.— The fortnightly meeting of the Caversham Council was held last night, v.'hen there were present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Bridgman), Ore Hancock, BaverStock, Ruston, M'Laren, Young, Rutherford, Wilson, Rae, Allen, M'lndce —The Finance Committee reported that L17316s lOd had been lodged in the bank during the past fortnight. The sum of L 664 10s 7d was recommended for payment. Adopted. - -The Works and Baths Committee recommended that 100 ft of 4in drainage pipes be laid in Peter street. They farther recommended that the offer of Mr W. B. Bridget to supply the timber for kerbing the footpath in Leckhampton court be accepted. Adopted.—The Returning Officer wrote stating that Robert Wilson, John M'lndoe, James Fenton M‘L»ren, and Harry Baverstock, had been returned for the vacancies in the Council. Received.—a petition was received from nine members of the Caversham Fire Brigade asking that Captain Blagdon be removed, as the men could nbt Work under him. ,Tlle tnatter was left in the hands of the Mayor and Gr Wilson, to' arrange an amicable settlement of the difficulty if possible.—Mr J. Ellis wrote informing the Council that be bad made the necessary alterations by which ail the fumes from the desiccator are forced through a charcoal furnace before entering the chimney. In connection herewith, Mr William Barron wrote that if this nuisance was not abated “ Caversham would have to step a long way down from its proud pre-eminence as the healthiest place in New Zealand. ” a He asked that the Council take the matter in band, as they were more capable of disposing of it in an effective way than any individual ratepayer. After discussion it was resolved—- “ That the clerk be instructed to write to Mr Ellis, informing him that complaints were still being made about the nuisance, and that unless it were mitigated at once legal steps would be taken.”
