A Russian cruiser fired on and captured an American vessel carrying on sealing in the Behring Sea, The Committee inquiring into the alleged corruption of officials in connection with contracts for the Bale Chaleur Railway report that the charges have not been sustained. The Italian railway inspector who was kidnapped by brigands in Salonica has been released. The wife and son of a Greek advocate, kidnapped by brigands at Janina Epirno, European Turkey, were released on payment of L 2,000. In the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday Thomas Blackwell, * charged with ab ducting bis neice from her parents, residing at Greytown, was acquitted. ‘ The Times ’ states that if France wishes England to remain in occupation of Egypt she should assist Russia to open the Dardanelles. The Vienna ‘ Nieue Frio Presae ’ declares that if France buys Russia’s friendship by conniving at the destruction of the most necessary olaase of the Treaty of Paris, Europe is on the eve of very serious complications, for the Powers arc unanimous in their determination to resist such a course. A heavy landslip in the Tyrol is creating an immense lake. The export of horses from Russia will probably be forbidden, Mr F, R. Bust, secretary of the Auckland Trades and Labor Council, will contest the Waikato seat in the Ministerial interest.
