SCOTCH CONCERT.

The concert given in the Choral .Hall last night drew ». good honse k but In other respV 1 * x w.afi hardly a success. Those among a audience who baled thejSj expectations on the brilliant p'erforinahaM ttf the pajrt'aeries protrioted by Signor Squarise Qh'a Hi rr Barmeyer mast have experienced grave disappointment in finding the pianiat wasting his ability on music that he knew but little about, and the violinist more or less at sea t and those who went hoping to enjoy "a nicht at name,'' as the phrase goes, had to acOept a sort of hybrid Scotch from most of the vocalists who attempted to sing in what ia to them a foreign tongue. The lesson of the concert, and one which we Bhould think the promoters rtill not readily forget, is that Scotch ihusic is a specialty ; it dannot be taken up offhand if the performance is to give pleasure to those who have heard the Kennedy Family and entertainers of that class; The Dingers who ,gava th&fr services last night ftro Undoubtedly competent to appear on the concert platform if they get a fair chance, but thoso of them who tried the Scotch articulation were more or less hampered thereby with the exception of Miss Cooper and Miss Smith. Our popular baritone made a brave dash at ' The deil's awa' on lines laid down by Santley, and Wisely paid chief attention to the music both in this and his oetiond song, which were both encored, and deserved the com plimeut. Eacores, however. Were the rule of the each of the singers being asked to reappear. Miss Morrison wisely turned her song (' Twas within a mile') into English, and allowed her effective voice to be heard to advantage ; Miss Cooper's first song was 'Castles in the air'; Miss Rose Blaney sang • Mary of Argyle' in an acceptable manner; Miss Blanche Joel contributed 'Aula Robin Gray'; and Mrs Murphy drew loud applause by her singing of ' Bonnie sweet Bessie. The other vocalists were Messrs Reunert and Jones. Mr R. R. Moss played a fantasia on the 'cello, and Mr H. Moss's flute solo was one of the exceptionally good items on the programme. Herr Barmeyer played the accompaniments.
