JUDGE EDWARDS’S APPOINTMENT.

TO IHI EDITOR. SIE, —I notice that three of the Supreme Court judges have given an opinion that Judge Edwards’s appointment is legal, but that the Government are taking steps to upset the appointment if they can. Surely it would be sufficient if the AttorneyGeneral argued the case, as this would not cost the colony anything; but it appears that two other lawyers are to be engaged along with him, and that one of these (Mr Vogel) was concerned for a prisoner who was sentenced to five years by this judge, It looks very much as if the Government were fighting the esse for the prisoner; but surely it would be sufficient if the Attorney - General alone appeared, as by the employment of two other lawyers as well thp colony will be put to a large amount of expense. A few hundreds spent in this way may benefit the lawyers, but what about the taxpayers 1 1 hope our representatives will call for a return early in the session of all expenses incurred by the present Government in connection with Judge Edwards.—l am, etc., Elector, Dunedin, May 4,
