VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
On Saturday afternoon a detachment of the Dunedin Naval Artillery received instructions from Sergeant-major Parker, of the Permanent Artillery, to man the 6-inch gun at the central battery at the Ocean Beach. The detachment marched out accordingly, and was in charge of Lieutenant-commander Allen. The Government intend to aak Lord Wolseley to recommend an Imperial officer well up in the latest scientific military knowledge as commandant of the New Zealand forces. The salary will be about L7OO, which will be provided without any increase in the Estimates, and will come out of retrenchments. The engagement will be for a limited term, but at the end of the term it can either be renewed or the Government can obtain the services of another officer,
