THE CENSUS.
The census returns for 1891 show the population of Christchurch to be 14,886, against 16,265 in 1886; Sydenham, 9,680, against 9,465; St. Albans, 5,231, against 4,925 ; Linwood, 4,677, against 4,051 ; Lyttelton, 4,091, against 3,996; Ashburton, 1,902, against 1,769 ; Akaroa, 572, against 662.
The census returns for the Hutt County show Males 6,216, females 5,557; total, 11,773. 'ln this are included the boroughs of Petone, 2,175; Onslow, 979; Melrose, 1,204; and the Lower Hutt town district, 1,317.
