[By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] [Per Press Association,] REJOICINGS IN QUEENSLAND, BRISBANE, May 2, The Eight Hours demonstration took place at Baroaldine yesterday, when 1,200 unionists marched in processiou. The chairman of the Strike Committee intimated that the pastoralists preferred to arbitrate, but the men would fight the matter out to the bitter end. He said that from the evidence he was convinced of the truth of the attempted poisoning of troopers by means of apples moistened with strychnine, and called upon every unionist to assist in producing the culprit. The proceedings were orderly. THE DEMANDS OF THE STRIKE. BRISBANE, May 2. It is estimated that L 1,600 is required weekly to maintain the strike. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Otago Trades and Labor Council was held on Thursday night Mr J. Robertson was in the chair, and there was a fair attendance of delegates, A large quantity of correspondence was received and dealt with. Attention was drawn to statements appearing in the Press that Mr J. R, Scott could obtain and send over to Queensland, if necessary, 300 shearers from Otago. The delegates present expressed the opinion that it was simply a piece of “blow,” and like a good many other statements of a like nature not worth notice. It being the night for nomination of officers for the ensuing twelve months, the following were nominated:— For president, Mr J, Robertson; vicepresident, Mr A. Judge ; secretary, Messrs R. Slater and H. Willis ; treasurer, Mr G, Parches; auditors, Messrs J. Ash and T. Sooones; trustees, Messrs Todd, Gardner, and Spiers. Committee reports were received and dealt with, after which the meeting adjourned.
