OTAGO BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION.
The following is the twenty-eighth annual report of the Otago Benevolent Trustees for presentation to the annual meeting of subscribers to be held on the 7th inst,:— The total number of persons relieved during tho year was 3,397, being an increase of 252 on previous year. Casual cafes are largely in excess. Permanent cases show a decrease, of about 70. Men. Women. Children. Husbands in lunatic asylum Casually relieved.. ..34 167 679 Totals .. ..254 717 2,426 The number of innmteß on Ist January, IS9O, was 112 men, 30 women, and 37 children. Received into the institution during the year : 127 men, 65 women, 89 children ; total 221, including 28 women admitted to the lying-in ward. Discharged: 108 men, 49 women, and 20 children ; total 177. Leaving on the Slst day of December, 1890,131 moo, 36 women, and 66 ohildren ; total 223. Twenty-two deaths occurred during the year. The expenses of the institution at Caversham amounted to L 3.128 3s 3d. The expenses for maintenance amounted to L 2,778 3s. The oharges are for cost of food, clothing, fuel, house furnishings, salaries of master, matron, servants and dootor, medicine, funerals, insurance, munloipal rates, and all working expenses except secretary and inspector's salary and office rent. The weekly average wsb 210, whioh gives a charge of 5s Id per head per week. The amount disbursed for outdoor relief was L 6.417 2a Bd, a decrease of L 325 6s 8d on that of previous year. The total amount expended on institution and outdoor relief shows a reduction of upwards of LSOO.
