FATAL ACCIDENT.

John M‘B&e, a single man of about fiftyfive years of age, met with a sudden and fatal accident last evening about seven o’clock in the Woodhaugh Valley. It appears the deceased was in company with a wood-carter named Jabor at the Woodhaugh Hotel, when Jabor’s horse, which was harnessed to a cart heavily laden with manure, made a sign of bolting. The deceased ran to the horse’s head, succeeded in getting hold of the reins, and had partially checked its career when he fell across the margin of the footpath, and, after being dragged a abort distance, the wheel of the cart passed over him and so severely crushed his chest that the poor fellow died before he could be removed to the hotel or medical aid could arrrive. The body was immediately carried to the hotel, and the landlord and neighbors did what they could until Dr Coughtrey reached the scene of the accident. Restorative measures were attempted, but life was too extinct.

The horse afterwards continued its mad run, broke down portions of two fences, and ran into another cart, but was eventually secured. Dr Coughtrey states that the greater number of the ribs on the left side of the body were crushed to pieces, and the lungs and most probably the heart bad also been crushed. The man died from internal bleeding. An inquest on the body was held at the Woodhaugh Hotel this afternoon at three o’clock before Mr Coroner Carew and a jury. After the evidence had been heard the jury returned a verdict of “ Accidentally killed.” Deceased was a native of Prince Edward Island, and had no relatives in the colony.
