SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.
The starters for the English Derby were Sainfoin, Le Nord, Orwell, Rathbeal, Kirk ham, Surefoot, Golden Gate, and another. Rathbeal was the' first away, but Orwell with Kirkham quickly appeared in front and led for a quarter of a mile. Kirkham command for a furlong further; Orwell in the meantime headed Sainfoin and Golden Gate, who came next. When a mile had been covered Kirkham had dropped back fifth, and at the top of the hill Sainfoin took up the running, Kirkham last. At the distance Surefoot was beaten. Le Nord made a desperate rush, but Sainfoin stalled it off and won by three-quarters of a length; Orwell a neck behind Le Nord and a head in front of Surefoot. Time, 2min 49$seo. The pace for the first threequarters of a mile was wretchedly slow. The ‘Standard’ says:—“ The short, scratchy action of Kirkham was- not equal to Derby form, and ha gave a poor exhibition of his capabilities. Mr White’s colt acted as whipper-in, and hung on hw bridle with
his mouth wide open, causing general laughter.” , The favorite double for the Auckland Steeplechase meeting to-morrow in Auckland is Auckland and Kangaroo, at 8 to 1.
