FOOTBALL.

IN i'ERPRO VINCI AL ASSOCIATION MATCH. The Association football match between Otago and Canterbury took place at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, yesterday afternoon, at the close of the Catholic sports. Raven played for Canterbury instead of Moss, who had sprained his ankle. It soon became apparent that the Canterbury men were superior both in speed and combination, and they soon carried the game into Otago’s territory, and from a scrummage in front of goal Fisher placed a neat goal for Canterbury. Soon afterwards Maude made a shot but missed it. This was followed by a long pass from Turnbull to Rutherford, who landed another goal for the home team, the ball glancing off the goalkeeper. The Otago team made several fine rushes, which were, however, ineffectual, and an excellent pass by Harper to Coolan enabled the latter to place a third goal for Canterbury. There was no further score in the first spell. Canterbury quickly assumed the offensive in the second spell, Ross and Carver with good dribbles and neat passing, assisted by a fine rush from Groves, carried the ball well down into Canterbury quarters, where the rush was gallantly stopped by Todhunter. The Otago team now rushed their opponents, and for some time the game swayed this way and that, till Hall, getting a pass from Turnbull, scored a fourth goal for Canterbury. The remainder of the spell passed without scoring. The Otago men made several fine rushes, but these were stopped by the good play of Rhodes and Todhunter, Carver, Salmond, and M'Millan were prominent among the Otago forwards. Moncrieff played a grand game as left full-back. Morris as right full-back also played very well. University v. Taieri, played at Mosgielon Saturday, resulted in a win for the town dub by 3 points to 2. Crawford potted a goal for the Univeisity, while Elder and another scored for the Taieri, Milton v. Bilclutha, played at Clutha on Saturday, resulted in the visitors winning by 6 points (two goals) to 4 points (one goal and one try). A Dunedin Association team defeated Kaitangata by two goals to nil. Good play was shown by the country club
