THE SWEATING COMMISSION
The membei-3 of the Sweating Commission are as follow:—Mr Co'in Allan and Rev Rutherford Waddell, of Dunedin ; Me««rs J R Blair and D. P. Fisher, of Wellington ; Messrs F. Jones, M.H.R., and F. E. Wright, of Christchurch ; Messrs Fraoc'a Cherry and T. Thompson, M.H.R., of Auckland; and Mr J. Fulton, M.H.R., as chairman.
The object of the Commission is to inquire as to the manner and terms on which persons are employed in wholesale and retail shops or manufactories and hotels; to report upon the relations generally subsisting between those who employ and tho:e who are employed; and to make recommendations as to the most suitable methods of determining questions arising between the two parties. It wi'l be seen that extensive scope is given to the Commission, and it will be equipped with all authority necessary to make it 3 inquiries exhaustive and valuable. Those peisons concerned who are in a position to give evidence should be prepared to come forward and do co as expeditiously as possible, for we understand the Commiss : on will sit very shortly. It is proposed to hold the first sitting in Dunedin, and at the other chief centres as soon as possible.
The usual meeting of the Unity Lod"e, 1.0.0. F., was hell on the evenin-r of Wedne--day, when tbe Grand Lodge officers D G M Bro. Cole and G.T. Ero. Alexander attended for the pi"pose of installing the officer for the ensuing half-year. Ero, Joseph HolgAte was installed ai N.G., Bro. J. J. Brooks as V.G , Bro. Boelke as treasurer, Bro. T. R. Dodd« as secretary (both bsint; re-elected), Bro. J. W Hardy as warden, Bro. G. Waliers as f G (re elected), Eros. Black and Waldie as R. and I. supporters to the N.G., Bros. Reeves and Willett as R. and L. supporters to the V.G., Bros Lothian and W. M'Lean as secretatie-. Consideration of a circular from the G.S. re proposed memorial over the late Bro. Boyd's "rave wa3 deferred until next meeting. A hearty vote of thanks to the installing officers was carried by acclamation; and it was resolved that as many members of the lodge as possible should pay a visit to the Liith Lod?e on Mond.v night.
