THE EXHIBITION RIFLE MEETING.

Third Day —Wednesday. One match was concluded this afternoon and two were advanced a stage In the Wanganui Match ten shots at 700 yds (counting for the Belt), one or two good scores made, but the shootin" as a whole was indifferent, owing donh&Jt the fact that there has not been * miiph practice at this distance. At the SOOvda range of the Otago Match, Private Kruse (Wanganui Rifles) made within one point of the possible, while the following had 33 to their credit: —P.O. Woollett (Dunedin Navals), Bombardier Grummett (Victoria), Lieutenant Ross (Napier), and Gunner Greenfield (Oamaru Artillery). The highest scorers at the two completed ranges (aOOvds and 600 yds) of the Exhibition Match were Gunner Gardner (B Battery), 63 ; Private Scott (Wellington Guards), 63: Private Millar (North Dunedin Rifles), 62 ; Gunner Driver (Port Chalmers Artillery), 61; Private Cameron (Christchurch Reserves), 61; Private M'Carthy (Victoria Rifles), Auckland), 61; Lieutenant Hendry fv aS 4u^ e ”j- Private Armstrong (North Dunedin Rifles), 61. No doubt a considerable alteration in these positions will be made when the 700 yds distance is fired.

During the luncheon adjournment Private T. Simpson, of the Kaitangata Rifles, was disqualified for allowing his rifle to be accidentally discharged. Fortunately no one was injured, but as there was a breach of the reguktmns which stipulate that no weapon shall be loaded except when the competitor is down firing, the Council having considered the matter felt compelled to disqualify the offender from further competition during the meeting. The regulation under which the penalty was imposed provides for exclusion trom further competition during the meeting any comp ei tor “who shall discharge hit rifle accidentally, either by his own want of care or by reason of any defect in the rifle.” The regulation is seemingly imperative - T£ e Wanganui Match, which began early in the day, did not terminate till late in the afternoon. The following take prizes : Waxqaxci Match.— Ten shots at 700 yds. Counting

Counted out; Captain Sommerville (Alexin* Cavalry), Sergeant Rosa (Otepopo a 1 * p a P tam Wat .e r s (Port Chalmers Artillery), Gunner Reid (Queenstown Artillerv), Private Raines (West Taieri), Lieutenant hite: (Auckland), Gunner Gardner (Dunedin Artillery). Fourth Day—Thursday. At last the Fates have proved propitious, the day being fine overhead with a bright light. The wind has, however, proved treacherous, coming both from the right and the left.

During the night the serenity of the camp was disturbed by the agonising cries of Hospital-orderly Coombes,' who has had charge of the ambujance tent at the last four rifle meetings. He is su&Wmg from a severe attack of dropsy and bronohitis, and Dr Will, of (who has heed unremitting in his attention), fears that his case is hopeless. We learn that Ccombes, who is attached to the Christchurch Hospital, had been ailing for some months, and the bad weather in the early part of the week has doubtless aggravated his illness. The ambulance waugon was telegraphed for to expedite his removal to the Dunedin Hospital. To-day’s proceedings began at eight o clock, when the 700 yds range of the ExhiJ?. 1 * 1011 aU( * 300 yds distance of the Otago Match. Gunner Driver, of the Port Chalmers Artillery, takes first prize in the Exhibition Match with 89 points, and * n addition to the money prize of L 25 gets an Exhibition gold medal. He fared_ consistently throughout the match, “““I ,^ d . scor ® 3 at every distance. At 700 yds Pnvane R. Soall, of Auckland, who is seventy-six years of age, and probably the oldest competitor at the Association s meetings, put on 24 with a miss, some of the leading aggregates—notably ivuchea (Wellington), Kruse (Wanganui), irurnell (W anganui), and Gardner (Dunedin) —made very poor shooting at this distance, laylor (Auckland) improved hia aggregate position considerably this morning. Captain Collins is sanguine of b'eincr able to terminate the final stage for the championship on Saturday afternoon. He proposes to finish the Otago Match, and to take the Auckland Match (kneeling at 300 yds ten shots).
