Mr Faulkner gave a free organ recital in the concert hall yesterday. The admissions yesterday totalled 6,106, of whom 4,239 (including the pupils of the Gleuore State School) paid at the turnstiles, and 1,615 were holders of season tickets, Ihe piece for the hand contest is from Rossini’s opera ‘ Le Comte Ory.’ The ‘North Otago Times’ says that it was put in practice on Tuesday by the Oamaru Naval Artillery's Band, and the general opinion was that it did not give sufficient scope lor the d’splay of the various instruments; being, iu fact, too light a piece for an important contest like that to take place at Dunedm. Wellington Garrison Bind Queenstown Brass Bind, Invercargill Garrison B,nd’ Inveic.rgill City Band, Oaamu Garrison B-nd’ Oannru Naval Artillery Bind, Port Chalmoio Bran Band, Caversham Bind, Dunedin Engineers’ Band, Dunedin G-rrison Band, Dunedin Ordnance Band, Kaikorai Band, St. Joseph’s Band (Launoetton Tasmania).

The prizes offered by the Exhibition Executive repro- ent something like L2OO in money, while valuable prizes in kind are offered by the local music trade and others. Messrs Hawkes and Son, of Leicester square, London, through their agents, the Dresden Pianoforte Agency Company, give a tenor trombone, beautifully finished and embellished, triple silver plated, with gold points, valued ai L 25. Messrs Charles Begg and Co. give a solo euphonium, valued a"; L2O, for a solo competition on the euphonium. The Dresden Piano Company give a solo cornet, silver plated, with gold points, to the winner of the solo cornet competition. Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewen give a black marble clock to the winner in the trombone solo contest, and several other prizes have been promised. The entries, which closed yesterday, embrace all the finest bands in this colony. Altogether about 400 men will take part in the contest, and it is intended to hold a grand parade of the bands through the City. In the contest the bands will play a piece of their own choosing and one prescribed by the Music Committee, which has been specially written by M. Riviera, of London (well known in connection with the promenade concert?, Covent Garden). The test selection is a fantcria on airs from Rossini’s opera ‘Le Comte Ory.’ The adjudicators in the grand contest will he Signor Squarise and Herr Alfred Pleyer, of the Exhibition orchestra, both gentlemen having held positions as bandmasters—the former in Italy and South Australia, and the latter in the Austrian and Russian armies. Associated with them is Mr A, D. M'Xntosh, of Wellington, perhaps one of the best judges of band music in the colonies. In the quickstep competition, which will be played marching, the test will be military as well as musical. The military judges will be Lieutenant-general Fulton, R.A., Colonel Morris (Madras Cavalry), and Major Gorin" (New Zealand Artillery). ° AWARDS IN HOPS AND MALT, Ibe awards in hops and malt are as follow: Hops (Class 24, subdivision 29). . Only one sample was entered for competition, which was awarded first certificate, it being a rich and highly-conditioned hop. The exhibitors were Messrs J. Wilson and Co., Dunedin.
