MORE LIBEL ACTIONS.
NEW PLYMOUTH, September 19,
Writs have been served on the proprietor of the ' Taranaki Herald' and ' Budget' and on Mr F. P. Corkhill (Deputy Offioial Assignee in Bankruptcy) at the suit of John Mynott for libel. The cause of action is an advertisement consisting of an apology from a man npmed John Hooper to Corkhill for signing a petition brought to him by Mynott; also for publication by the papers of a report of proceedings in the House, when Mr Samuel referred to the same and read the apology given by Hooper. The plaintiff claims damages at LSOO from each. Mr Samuel has been retained by the defendants. The ' Herald' on Saturday last published as an advertisement a letter from Hooper to Mynott, in which the former retracts portions of his apology to Corkhill. Corkhill in another advertisement states that the assertions of Hooper are untrue, and were obtained under threats of an action at a time when the detention of Hooper in New Zealand would have seriously inconvenienced him. Hooper left the colony last week for Australia.
