SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

The programme of the Takapuna J. C. winter meeting, which the Auckland R, C. recently refused to pass, has been amended by the addition of the sum required (LSO), which has been allotted as a prize in a race added to the programme called the Compulsory Stakes, for two-year-olds. It is stated, however, that the only two-year-old eligible is the property of a member of the club,

A Blenheim telegram states that a match took pkne on Saturday between Gaukrodger, a well-known Marlborough ped, and J. Bain, a sprint runner hailing from Canterbury and Otago, the distances being 100 yds, 220 yds, and 440y(?s; L2O aside. Bain won the 100 yds eTent by about half a yard, but Gaukrodger ran clean away from him in tn3 other two events. In the 440 yds race Bain was beaten before half the distance had been covered, and did not finish. The match came off on the racecourse before a large number of spectators. The greyhounds which were sold at auction by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. on Saturday did not realise very big prices. Six dogs were disposed of, the highest price given for any dog being LI 15s. A practice match was played at Tahuna Park on Saturday between teams captained by Trythall (defence) and Sharpe (attack) and resulted in a draw, each side scoring a goal. The new members are showing signs of soon becoming proficient in the game, which has now gained a strong foothold in our chief cities.

The correct betting on the English Derby is: 2 to 1 against Donovan, 10 to 3EI Dorado, 10 to 1 Enthusiast, 25 to 1 Ben Strome, 33 to 1 Miguel. Surrey will not allow Spofforth to play for Derbyshire. Lochiel and Rose Argent returned from Australia to-day by the Wakatipu. On the Dunedin Club's green on Saturday a bowling match was played between the City Council, represented by Crs Barron, Cohen, Haynes, and Sinclair (skip), and the Post Office, represented by Messrs Ferguson, Butts, Dall, and Cowie (skip). The civic fathers had a very bad time, scoring only 2 points to their opponents' 21.

D.J.C. COMMITTEE MEETING. The Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club met on Saturday evening; presentMessrs Meenan, Taggart, Gourley, Philp, Dowse, Maclean, Wilson, and Stephenson. It was resolved that in consequence of the alteration in the time of the arrival of the express train the hour of closing nominations and acceptances be extended to 10 p.m. Instructions were given to arrange for a band at the May meeting, and that the time of starting the first race each day be the game as last year—viz., twelve o'clock. The seoretary was empowered to call for tenders for the ladies' room for tho May meeting. A donation was granted to the Otago Hunt Club.

It was resolved to give a cup or specie to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association as a prize in the thoroughbred horse class. The secretary reported that the trottiDg mare Hilda had been protested against at Riverton on the ground that she had run at Thornbury under the name of Peat Bog. It transpired that the name of Peat Bog had been betowed through the ignorance of the mare's temporary owner, and the Committee decided that the stakes and totalisator money be paid to Hilda. The Riverton Club's disqualification of the jockey H. Duncan was endorsed, but the secretary was instructed to inquire why the Riverton Club did not also disqualify the mare Parvula. The Bald Hill Flat Club reported that they had diEqualified Charles Mitchell and his horse Tommy for fraudulent running in the Maiden on the 18th March, but that the horse had since been sold and the disqualification removed. The Committee endorsed the removal of the disqualification, but intimated their desire to know why the Bald Hill Flat Club had removed the disqualification from the horse and not from the owner. , The Secretary of the C.J.C. intimated by letter that if any of the C.J.C. Committee attended the May meeting they might confer with the D.J.C. re including trotting raceß in programme?. W. M'Kewan asked the Committee to call on the Taieri Club for an explanation of why they disqualified his mare Rose. It was resolved that the Club could take no action in the matter unless requested by the Taieri Club to do bo.
