He did not appear in public till October 10, when he ran unplaced in the Middle Park Plate, won by Donovan. At the Newmarket-Houghton meeting he ran second to Royal Star in the Criterion Stakes, of 776 sovs, for which nine smarted ; also second (8.9) to Donovan (9.5) in the Dowhurst Plate, of 1,197 sovs, three othcr3 taking part in the race. Enthusiast is engaged in the Derby, St. Leger, Newmarket Stakes (of 7,500 sovs), Lancashire Plate (of 12,000 sovs), and other important races, Donovan was the crack two-year-old of last season, he winning eleven races worth no less than L 16.487, which amount he increased to L 27.487 last month by winning the Leicester Prince of Wale 3 Stakes, beating Pioneer, Minthe, and others, Donovan started his career at Lincoln by winning the Brocklcsby Stakes, of 1,034 sovs, from ten others. At Leicester he secured the Portland Stakes, of 6,000 sovs, in the large field of twenty-five starters. At Manchester he went down before Chitabob in the Whitsuntide Plate, of 4,400 sovs; but as he was carrying 9st 101b to the winner's Sat 111b there was no disgrace attaching to the defeat. Nine others finished behind the pair. At Ascot Donovan beat seven others in the New Stakes, of 1,169 sovs; and at Bibury ho secured the Foal Stakes, of 475 sovs. At Stockbridge the Hurstbourne Stakes, of 1,250 sovs, fell to him, while at Newmarket July he beat Gold in the July Stakes, of 1,120 sovs. He easily defeated Fleurde-Lys and Pantomime in the Ham Stakes, of 700 sovs, at Goodwood, but could only get home third behind El Dorado and Gold in the Prince of Wales Stakes, of 2,600 sovs, at the same gathering. At Newmarket First October meeting he carried off the Buckenham Stakes, of 900 sovs, and the Hopeful Stakes, of ■ r >37 sovs, while at the Second October gathering he landed the Middle Park Plate, of 2,105 sovs, beating thirteen others. His two-year-old career was wound up in brilliant style by a win in the Dewhurst Plate, of 1,197 sovs, in which he was giving weight to all his four opponents. Donovan is engaged in the Derby, St. Leger, Kempton Park Royal Stakes (of 10,000 sovs), Newmarket Stakes (of 7,500 sovs), Sandown Park Eclipse Stakes (of 11,100 sova), the Lancaster Plate ol (12,000 sovs), and other valuable stakes.

Pioneer ran only once last year—namely, in the Doveridge Stakes, of 500 sovs, at Derby, which he won from three others. He is engaged in the Dsrby, St. Lcger, Grand Prix do Paris, Royal Stakes (of 10,000), sovs Newmarket Stakes (of 7,500 sovs), Eclipse Stakes (of 11,100 sovs), Lancashire Plate of (12,000 sovs), and other races.
