MUNICIPAL.

Caversham.—A special meeting of the Caversham Borough Council was held last evening for the purpose of dealing with the general special and water rates for the en* suing year, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr M'Laren), Crs Nutting, Wilson, Lawjj less, Coverlid, Jones, Kirby, Cole, Bridgman, Baverstock, and Young.—The Mayor stated that he had received a requisition signed by forty-three of the ratepayers asking him to call a special meeting to consider the proposal to strike a general rate of Is 3d in the £ for the ensuing year. The requisition was read, and His Worship had replied to the effect that when the estimate of revenue and expenditure for the current year was submitted to the Council they postponed the same for a fortnight to see if it were possible a shilling rate would be sufficient, and that at their last meeting they had adopted the Is 3d rate. Had the requisition been presented during the fortnight that the question was under consideration, he would have been only too happy to comply. As it was, the question had been decided for this year.—The ordinary meeting of t&e Council was then proceeded with.—Mr J. P. Mait« land wrote asking that the approaches to the Carisbrook Cricket Ground might be put in a better state before the winter Bet in. Received. —Mr George Methven wrote resigning his position as councillor. Received. Mr Henry Rose wrote asking that watertight slides might be put in the boxes at the junction of the drains in Burns and M'Glashan streets with those of Cargill road. Referred to the Drainage Committee.—Mr W. H. M'Keay (on behalf of Mr F. M'Grath) wrote applying for consent to a continuation of Sea View terrace, in the Township of Allandale. Referred to a deputation to wait on the Registrar of Deeds.—Mr William Dunn wrote complaining that the box culvert crossing Forbury road, at the corner of Albert street, was too small to carry off the drainage, and that his property was damaged thereby, Referred to the inspector to report.—Mr John Urquhart wrote offering to undertake work in connection with proposed improvements to the borough reserve. Received.—Mr Milne, clerk to the Caversham School, wrote that due attention would be given to prevent the water flowing from the school on to the footpath. Received.—Mr Hugh Calder wrote re water rates on properties fronting the Forbury road. It was decided to remit LI 10s to Mr Calder.—Mr G. S. Brodrick wrote drawing attention to the worn condition of the footpath and road in Royal terrace, Kew, which he stated were worn through in several places. Referred to the inspector to report.—The In, speotor reported that the repairs to the main drain had been completed, also the footpath on the Main South road from the City boundary to Farkside. The rotten rock had been spread on Coney Hill road, and that on Victoria street nearly spread. The repair to the footpath on the Forbury road had been done, but it requirred tarring and sanding. The drainage pipes in Edward street were being laid, and the repairs to the footpath in Goodall street were being proceeded with. About 60yds of loose stones

had been laid at the Forburyroad end of the Esplanade to prevent the bank being washed away. The sand was working up again. He reported that a great nuisance existed in several parts of the borough on street lines and private property through people depositing ashes, rubbish, and even nightsoil. The contract for asphalting the footpath on the Main South road was nearly completed. Adopted. It was left with the mayor and inspector to see that the alleged nuisance was abated.—The Works Com-, mitteo reported having instructed the inspector to repair the footpaths on the Forbury road and in Goodall street, and having instructed the clerk to request tho Caversham School Committee to form a water channel so as to prevent the water running off tho ground from damaging the footpath in College street. Adopted. —The Drainago and Water Committee recommended that two drainage junctions to convey the surface water from the Cliffs road and Beach street into the drain that is laid on to the beach be fixed. The Committee had instructed the clerk to inform the Presbyterian Church Board of Otago that unless the nuisance of stagnant water existing on part of section 10, block 7, town district, was at once removed, proceedings would be taken. Adopted.— The Finance Committee reported that L4B 2a 4d had been lodged in the bank since last meeting, and recommended that L6B 2s lid for general accounts and L 8 ISs for water supply accounts be passed for payment.
