STOCK AND STATION REPORT,

Mr Donald Stronach (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week ended April 3 as follows :

Fat Cattle. —170 head were yarded at Burnside for this day’s sales, three-fourths of which were cows and light weight bullocks, the balance fair to good quality. There was a good attendance of the trade; but, although this was only an average ertry, competition lacked spirit, last week’s prices being hardly maintained. Best bullocks brought from L 7 2s 6d to L 8 ss, light weights and medium quality L4ssto L 6 17s fid; cows, from L 3 2s fid to L 6 17a fid.

Fat Sheep.—2,ss6 were penned, mostly crossbreds (ewe-i preponderating), quality ranging from inferior and medium to prime. Competition at the commencement of the sales was fairly active, but down towards the close there was less demand. Biddings were less spirited, prices realised showing no improvement on last week’s. Best cross-bred wethers brought 10s fid to 12s 3d; one pen extra heavy lincolns, 14s; ordinary, 8s fid to 10s; best cross-bred ewes, 9s to 11s 3d ; one small pen extra prime, 12s 9d ; inferior to medium, fin to 81 fid; two pens merino wethers, Bs. We sold, on account of Mr William Livingstone (Waitabuna), Mr James M‘Lean (Herbert), and others, cross-bred ewes from 11s 3d to 7s 3d. Fat Lambs.—749 were penned, representing alt qualities. Competition was less active, and prices all round slightly easier. Best brought 7s to 8s 3d, others 4a fid to 6s 6d. We sold on account of Mr James M'Lean one pen to 8s 3d.

Tigs.—26o were penned, comprising all descriptions, The demand for suckers and stores was weak, while for porkers and baconers competition was only moderately active. Suckers brought 7s to 11s fid; stores, 14s to 20s; porkers, 29s to 365; baconers, 40s to 555, extra heavy to 60s. Store Cattle.—There is no change to report in the market for this description of stock. There is some inquiry for quiet, well-bred bulocks. but transactions are limited.

Store Sheep.—A moderate demand continues to exist for these, and suitable lots of young sheep could be placed at late rates. Considerable numbers of aged sheep, mostly ewes, are being disposed of both privately and at public auction, but there is no improvement in prices to be recorded.
