MINING BOOM IN CALIFORNIA

A late copy of the San Francisco ‘ Bulletin ’ kindly placed at our disposal has the following:—

The recent placer discoveries in Lower California appear to have a basis on fact. They have created intense excitement, and have enticed hundreds of prospectors into that section. The San Diego ‘Union’ interviewed a gentleman just from the mines a few days ago, who said : “I have been a miner for a number of years, and do not usually get excited by reports, but I am sure that in the last four days I have seen between 4,000d0l and 5, OOOdol in nuggets, grains, and dust brought into Ensenada, and sold either to the merchants or bank. One nugget I have seen will be in the city within a few days. It weighs 270z, and is now the property of Mr Powers, a merchant of the Real, who has taken into his store 3,000d0l in dust and nuggets within the past five days. I have seen another nugget weighing 9oz 7dwt, two others weighing over Boz, and many more weighing from loz to sdz.” D. H. Furman, another miner, said to the ‘ Union ’: “I have just returned from a two weeks’ visit to Ensenada, and I can corroborate everything published up to date from the placer mines in Santa Clara Valley. Tuesday and Wednesday, to my _ certain knowledge, the miners brought in very nearly B,OOOdol in coarse gold, which was the result of the work of less than a dozen men for only a few days. I am satisfied that there is a very fine ‘ poor man’s mine ’ there—probably the finest ever discovered on this coast. The most reliable of the prospectors states that the deposit is about eighteen miles long by twelve miles broadground enough for 5,000 men to work for twenty years. I heard of no man making less than 12dol per day, and some of them report as high as OOOdol. The quartz ledges running across the gulches show very rich also.”
