Caversham.—Last night’s meeting of the Council was attended by the Mayor, Crs Kirby, Bridgman, Young, Baverstock, Lawless, Coverlid, Nutting, and Wilson, Apologies were made for the non-attendance of Crs Cole and Frye.-A complaint as to the Macandrew road drain was referred to the inspector.—lt was resolved to communicate with the police in respect to a petition asking that people with vehicles might be prevented from occupying public thoroughfares at St. Clair and selling refreshments there.—The City Corporation wrote stating that the Council’s Committee who visited the gasworks did not find the nuisance there which had been alleged to exist, and further stated that no nuisance should be allowed to exist in the future, —The president of the social purity work in connection with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union wrote complaining of the indecency which was prevalent at the St. Clair bath on Boxing Day, and asked that the Council would take steps in the matter. It was resolved that the Council should consider the matter.—Two motions were carried in connection with the works at St. Clair : first—" That the inspector be instructed to erect a fence across (he road {overlooking St. Clair bath, to prevent horses and vehicles damaging the newly -formed road to the second beach* such fence to be erected opposite the refreshment rooms at St. Clair ” ; second—“ That this Council erect a fence 4Jft high, length about two chains, on the road overlooking the St. Clair bath. —The Finance Committee reported that they had paid L4B Ids 5d on various accounts ; that the sum of L 269 Is 4d had been paid into the bank j and recommended that L 42 3s 2d for general accounts, L2O 10s Id for the St. Clair relief works account, and LI 10 3s 6d for the water supply account, be passed for payment. That Reid and Maxwell’s tender for the supply of do» collars at 4d to 9sd each had been accepted.—The Works and Baths Committee reported that they had postponed the consideration of the question of water channels in College street until next meeting. They recommended that that portion of the Main South road footpath from Wilkie road to the City boundary be tarred and sanded, and that they would report on the other portion of the footpath at next meeting.—The Drainage and Water Committee reported that with regard to William Lloyd’s letter they were of opinion that the Council had no power to deal with the question of the nuisance caused by geese on the roads until legislation had been made on the matter. They recommended that the water supply be extended about seven chains on the Corstorphine road. They recommended that Mr S. J. Loring’s request for a stand pipe for garden and fire purposes be granted on the usual condition of LI per annum. They recommended that Cr Coverlid be appointed to confer with the Mayor of South Dunedin with reference to the removal of nightsoii from the borough.—lt was decided to add the names of Cr Nutting and the mayor to act with Cr Coverlid, and the report was then adopted.
