The cable steamer Recorder started from Java on the 15th inst. to take soundings along the line of the proposed cable to Western Australia,

The first stage of the champion match was won by Reid, of Tasmania, with a score of G3. M'Carthy, of Dunedin, takes a prize with GO. The second stage was won by Lawson, of Victoria, with 65, M'Carthy again taking a prize.
