A largely-attended meeting of colliery owners was held when a absolution was passed regretting that they were unable to grant an advance of to the miners. They also a<*reecf that the Mayor of Sheffield, along with representatives chosen by miners, could inspect their books in order to prove that they were not in a position to pay a higher rate of wage. Considerable alarm is felt in the metropolis in consequence of the strike extending throughout country. The stock of coal at present in London will probably last a fortnight; but should the strike become general much inconvenience and distress will he experienced. The Suez Canal is blocked owing to the grounding of a steamer.

Mr Fehon, of Victoria, and Mr Oliver, of Sydney, have been appointed members of the New Soutli Wales Railway Commission. Several applications were received from gentlemen in New Zealand.
