Dogs as Sailors.
Dogs make good sailors, and are quite as faithful at sea on land. But it is not easy to explain their conduct sometimes, as you will see from this story of a gentleman and his pet. He says“ I once had a very olever, good-tempered dog called * Bounce,’ who always accompanied me in all my shooting and yachting expeditions, and of whom I was very fond, and I can tell yon a very funny story about him. One fine day I went ashore for a fresh supply of stores. Before I could complete my purchases it began to rain very heavily, so I bought a cheap pea-jacket, and, when on board again,
laid it on the deck. Bounce took a sudden and unaccountable dislike to that garment, and bit a hole in the sleeve. This surprised me very much. He was usually a very quiet dog, and never mischievous or destructive, but from that day I could never leave the coat anywhere without him finding it and biting a hole in it. Some months after, when I thought he had forgotten all about it, I went ashore, and left Bounce asleep in the cabin, having hidden the jacket underneath some rugs in the bunk where I always slept. In about an hour I returned, when Bounce rushed up to me, wagging his tail and seeming mighty pleased about something ; and, on going down into the cabin, I found my jacket torn up into shreds. What made it more strange was that I had bought one exactly like it for my skipper, but Bounce never meddled with that.
