SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

The ‘ Bruce Herald ’ reports the death on Friday of Haka (Satirist—Tangi) from inflammation. It will be recollected that the horse was purchased from Mr D. O’Brien at the Hunt Club meeting for Ll6O by Mr T. Kett, on behalf of some Milton sportsmen. The name of Phormium Tenax was omitted from the list of C. J.C. Derby acceptors. The backers of horses in the Caulfield Cup are slowly settling up. By Chicago’s win the ring have been struck rather heavily, and have had to pay away L 50.000. There is little or no betting on the V.R.C. Derby. 2tol is offered against Melos, but backers are standing out for sto 2. Carbine •is quoted at 5 to 2; Volley, Bto 1; Aldivallock, 100 to 1 (offered). The latest quotations for the Melbourne Cup are :

8 to 1 agst Mentor (tk) 10_l Tradition (tk and off) 100 8 Whakawai (off ; 100 to 7 wtd) 100 B Arsenal (tic and off).

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

CHRISTCHURCH, October 23.

Shortly after three o’clock this morning British Lion, assisted by Ravenswing and Parvula, was tried over the Cup distance, and the black horse acquitted himself fairly well. Lorraine and St. Clair galloped two and a half miles at a strong pace, and both pulled up well. Vandal performed the same journey at half speed; and Exchange led Son-of-a-Gun in a good working gallop over two miles. Escutcheon was sent two miles steadily, and Cuirassier and Leopold were associated in a couple of rounds at a smart pace. Cuirassier has thrown off the effects of his recent accident, but does not move so freely as his companion. Ruby appeared to have the better of a strong gallop with Manton, Patrician, who started with the pair, being beaten by 200 yards. The following are the other horses that did beat work during the morning:—Dudu, Escapade, Water Baby, Half Guinea, and Corunna.
