An accident occurred at a football match at Whalley Range, Manchester, on Saturday, April 7, which resulted in the death of one of the players, Mr H. J. Fletcher, of Eccles, aged twenty-three, a member of a well-known family of cricketers and football amateurs. Mr Fletcher was taking part in a game under the Rugby rules, between past and present members of the Manchester Football Club, and whilst "tackling" another player he came into such violent collision with his opponent that his neck and spine were seriously injured. He was at once carried off the ground, and seeing that he was in a critical condition he was conveyed to Manchester Royal Infirmary, where he died on the following morning. A late cablegram states that the sporting libel action of C. Wood v. the London 'Licensed Victuallers' Gazette' has been commenced in the Divisional Court of Queen's Bench. The plaintiff, while under cross-examination, denied that he had ever pulled a horse named Success, but he admitted that he had frequently made bets on races in which he took part. His income amounted to L 6,000 a year.
