SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

A meeting of the Union street Committee, held last evening, was attended by Messrs M'Laren (chairman), Drew, Mathews, Swan, Gillies, Jackson, and Sleigh. Messrs Swan and Drew were reappointed a Visiting Committee. The average attendance for the month of June was reported to be—boys 345, girls 278 ; total, C 22. The head-master enclosed a report of the recent examination, and mentioned that there were seventeen more passes than last year, and one failure less. The extra marks were also higher, the percentage on class subjects being G5 instead of 59, and in additional subjects 88 instead of 82. A motion was passed complimenting the head-master and his assistants on the satisfactory result of the inspector's examination.

The Green Island Committee accepted the resignation of Mr Thomson, pupil-teacher. The head-master (Mr Duncan) reported that tho average attendance for the month of June was 29C.

The meeting of the Arthur street School Committee on Monday evening was attended by Messrs Burt (chairman), Sligo, Maitland, M'Gregor, Adams, and Captain Orkney. The following report was submitted by Mr Barrat*: —Average attendance for quarter ending June: Boys 347, girls 288; total, 635. Number on register at end of quarter: Boys 386, girls 326; total, 712. Admitted during the quarter: 28 boys and 27 girls. Left during the quarter: 31 boys and 39 girls. Highest number in attendance any half-day during the quarter: 366 boys, 306 girls; total, 672. Messrs Burt and Sligo were appointed the Visiting Committee for the month.

The meeting of the Macandiew road Committee last night was attended by—Messrs Ings (chairman), Dowland, Hallam, Quirk, Collins, and Dodds. —Mr Hallam, on behalf of the Visiting Committee, reported satisfactorily as to the manner in which the school was conducted. Mr Henderson resigned as a member of the Committee, and it was suggested that it should be received with regret. A letter waa read from the Education Board offering L 4 towards the cost of a shelter-fence, and it was referred to the Works Committee to call tenders and act. Mr Dodds was appointed a member of the Works Committee. Mr E. Hogg was elected a member of the Committee i>iee Mr Henderson. The head-master reported that the average attendance for the quarter was 602.9, and pointed out that as the average attendance for two quarters had been above 600 that they were entitled to a fifth assistant male teacher. It was resolved that the secretary apply to the Education Board for such appointment to be made.
