Some int-resting experiments were made off Dover recently with a S' a anchor which is designed for the use of vessels In U'gent distress at soa. The experiments were unanimou ly considered by all those who wHce9Bed them to be eminently pucoessful, and the anchor an invention which might be the means of giving many n ve«sel when at the mercy of tho sea. The anohor, if rightly so termed, is made of canvas in the shape of a bag. These anchors or bags were thrown into the soa, and made fast to the bow of the vessel by a stout rope. The immediate object of these anchors Is to bring a vessel up head to sea when all other means have failed and the vessl is In danger of foundering. The inventor, Captoin Waters, made use of a temporarily-constructed arrangement of this kind in a terrific gale in the Bay of Biscay rome years ago, when his veseel was In danger of foundering, and the craft, although only a small one, was brought head to the sea by this means, and successfully rode out the gale for fifteen hours, when it abated.
