THE SIXTH AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN.

AGAINST PAST AND PRESENT OF

OXFORD UNIVERSITY.

This match was commenced at Leyton (in Essex) on June 11, in beautiful weather and in the presence of a moderate number of spectators. M'Donnell having won the toss, he and Bannerman went to the wickets. The captain only made 4, while Trott, who followed, was dismissed without scoring. On Bonnor joining Bannerman runs came rapidly, both being in good form. The former eventually retired with 65, and the latter with 25. Jarvis played well for 39 ; and of the others, Blackham (10) and Ferris (11) alone reached double figures. Owing principally to the interesting stage the game was left at on the first day—the Home team having scored 112 for the loss of seven wickets—the attendance was very large when Leslie, the not-out of the previous day, accompanied by Croome, resumed the game. These two defied all the efforts of the colonial bowlers until the former had scored 62 and the latter 66. Buckland (43) and Rashleigh (33) also played well for their runs. The innings closed for 248, leaving the Australians in a minority of 72. The features of the third day's play were the even scoring of the colonials, the bowling of Turner, and the collapse of the University players. Edwards, who went in Beventh, carried out his bat for a well-played 50 in the second innings of the Australians, which closed for 292. In the second innings of Oxford no lengthened stand was made, and, notwithstanding that seven of the team scored double figures, the innings only realised 146, leaving the visitors victors, with 71 • uns to spare.
