Captain John Sinclair, a supporter of Mr Gladstone, has been returned for Ayr Burghs in place of Mr R. F. Campbell, who had resigned. Mr Evelyn Ashley was the defeated candidate. [This is the gain of a seat by the Gladstonians. Captain Campbell (Union-Liberal) has represented the constituency for a great many years. In 1880 his majority was 883; in 1885, 342 ; and in 1886, 1,175.] Two Australian wheat cargoes have been sold at 32s 9d> and a third at 33s 3d.
Information has been received from Zululand that the followers of the rebel chief Denbulu are deserting him.
The latest reports received from the Congo mention that Mr Stanley has been wounded in an encounter with a hostile tribe.
The dividend of the new Oriental Bank is 6 per cent. The net profit was L 50.000. The Canadian four million loan at 3 per cent, has been subscribed threefold, at an average of L 95. Count Kalnoky says that Austria will not interfere with internal affairs in Bulgaria, nor will she permit other Powers to do so.
