THE PRISONER ROBERTS'S ESCAPE.

TO THE EDITOR. SIR,—A searching and open inquiry will of course be held touching this scandal. From the numerous escapes lately I am afraid our prison discipline is not what it is represented. A sentry should certainly have been posted in the rear as well as the front of the building. Full information on this point is of paramount importance. In asking insertion of this letter I have no wish to animadvert upon any laxity of tho Prisons Inspector; yet, bearing in mind his expressed public opinion— vide Dunedin Gaol inquiry—l feel confident he will court the most searching public investigation.— l am, etc., A JCSTICE OF THE PEACE. Dunedin, June 18.
