(Received June 2,1888, at 1 46 p.m.) The Government intend almost literally to carry out Major-General Schaw's recommendations for the improvement of the defences. The military estimates will be submitted to Parliament next week. A VALUABLE OPINION. SYDNEY, June 2. Colonel Morgan, American Consul-general, is of opinion that the American-Chinese Treaty is practically inoperative, as the Chinese are only precluded from landing in America the first time, and does not prevent Chinamen from visiting China and returning on exemption certificates. Ho considers that Australia's difficulty is the same as America's, viz., the trafficking in exemptions and naturalisation papers. ENCOUNTER WITH A BUSHRANGER. SYDNEY, June 2. A man named Burns, believed to be Riley the bushranger, who was noted many years ago for desperate deeds, has been arrested for horse stealing near Armidale, He made two desperate attempts to shoot Constable Scomukage, who shot him. A BIG PRIZE. MELBOURNE, June 2. (Received June 2,1883, at 2.10 p.m.) The Governmant have been asked to grant L.3,000 towards an international regatta. A SUCCESSFUL OPERATION. MELBOURNE, June 2. The first issue of tenders for Treasury bills for L 25.000 were opened to-day, and was over-subscribed by L 178.000. The principal tenderers were the local banks and capitalists. The prices ranged from par to 2£ premium. TASMANIA'S FINANCES. HOBART, June 2. In the Assembly last night the Treasurer delivered his Financial Statement. The financial year of the colony does not close until the end of December, but it is estimated that the revenue to the end of June will be L 606.800. The estimated deficiency to the end of December is L 183.000. The revenue shows a good increase, but the expenditure has increased. The Treasurer proposes a halfpenny tax in the pound on personal estate. The ad valorem duties are to be raised to 12i per cent., and a million loan is to be floated at 3£ per cent. HELD FOR MURDER. MELBOURNE, June 2. (Received J line 2,1888, at 2 p.*:) Bernard Sheridan, a publican, near Renalla, has been arrested on a charge of murdering his housekeeper, Mrs M'Grath, by throwing her out of a buggy. SMART BUT MEAN. MELBOURNE, June 2. The Government are in receipt of information that twenty-two Chinamen have entered Victoria across the border of New South Wales, having been landed in Twofold Bay by a steamer which left Sydney. Steps are being taken to confirm the information.
