M'Sweeny, a young laborer, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of forging and uttering a cheque for L 9, fie bought goods of the value of LI 10s from Ballantyne and Co., drapers, and got change, in December last. The cheque was drawn in favor of William Anglan, "on account of shearing," and Bigned "Mr William Anglan." At the Police Court to-day Jonathan Roberts was remauded till Tuesday. He appears in capital condition, and said that he would plead guilty, as he wanted to have it over as soon as possible. The Henleyß, charged with shooting at P. Sinclair, were remanded for a week, as Sinclair is still unable to leave his bed. WELLINGTON, June 1. The City Council have rejected amotion to reduce the salaries of their officials. The tender of the Gulcher Electric Lighting Company for lighting the city has been accepted. The amount is LI ,750 per annum for the first five years, and the tenderers offer to run it for a further period of five years at L 1.600 per aunum should the Council not purchase the plant at the end of the first five years. The contract provides for •ISO Swan-Edison incandescent lamps, each of twenty actual candle power. The 'Gazette' notices that the defence buildings at Taiaroa Heads have been proclaimed a prison ; the prison at Lawrence has been proclaimed a gaol. C. Phillips is to be gaoler at Taiaroa Heads, and Charles Parker at Lawrence. Lieutenant Fairburn, of the Dunedin Irish Rifles, is gazetted captain.
