FIRES.
A fire broke out in the premises of Joseph Hiicker, cabinetmaker, St. Andrew street, shortly after seven o'clock last evening, and considerable damage was done to the building before it was got under. When the brigade put in an appearance there was every indication of the fire spreading to the shop of Mr Broad, which was only separated by a narrow right-of-way, but the men worked with a will and confined it to the one place. The origin of the fire is a mystery, inasmuch as Mr Hiicker and his family were up-country at the time and the premises were consequently untenanted. Owing to Mr Hiicker's absence from town, the insurances cannot be ascertained at present. About 8.30 p.m. the bell was again rung for what proved to be a chimney on lirt.
