SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

The following weights have been declared for the Sydney Gold Cup :

The. committee of the Dunedin Cycling Club met on Tuesday evening and arranged to hold a race meeting on a small scale on the Oval, open to members of the club only. Saturday, April 6, was the date fixed. A maiden and one or two other races will be held, for which prizes will be given. J. Howlison will attempt to break the Oval record for one mile, which is 2min 56sec. The following twenty-two will represent Wellington against Lilly white’s teamDr Collins, Moorhouse, Motley, Gore, Heenan, M'Girr, Hewatt, Dryden, Kirker, Boddington, Nicholls, Lawson, Morice, Stinson, Merry, Norris, Ronaldson, Wiren, Davis, Webb, Malcolm, Koch; emergency—Creeks. A meeting of the committee of the New Zealand Bowling Association was held last night in the Grand Hotel. Present: Messrs Mowat (in the chair), Carlton, Secular, Ross, Baxter, Curie, Yates, Dawson, Chalmers (Lawrence), W. Wright, Edgar, Moodie, and G. Capstick. Mr John L. Butterworth wrote resigning the office held by him as president of the Association. It was resolved that the resignation be accepted. Mr A. Mowat was appointed to act as chairman during the balance of the season, with the consent of the Hon. J. T. Peacock. Mr J. Hyman wrote stating that Mr Mark Moss, of Melbourne, one of the proprietors of the Dunedin Brewery Company, had authorised him to offer a valuable prize to be competed for by the different bowling clubs this season; and a further offer was received of a pair of bowls for the single-handed tournament. It was resolved that the presents be accepted, and that Mr Mark Moss be accorded the thanks of the association. _ The following delegates were appointed to the associationJ. Secular, Invercargill; James Edgar, Christchurch; W. Wright, Dunedin; Thomas Moodie, Balclutha. The following clubs signified their intention of compsting in the Easter tournament;—Dunedin, three rinks; Caledonian, three rinks; Roslyn, three rinks; Taieri, two rinks; Balclutha, two rinks ; Lawrence, two rinks ; Christchurch, two rinks ; Milton, two rinks.

The 21st inst. was fixed as the time for closing the entries for the rink tournament, in which it was decided to play rink against rink, the games to last two hours ; and for the single-handed tournament on the 29th inst. The matches were fixed for Good Friday, Saturday, and Easter Monday. For the smoke concert on Monday, Messrs Mendershausen and Marsden’s offer to provide the singers, and that of the Dunedin Amateur Orchestral Association to provide the music, were accepted. Messrs Edgar and Moodie were appointed to act with Mr Mowat to give a definite decision as to the dispute between the two Oamaru clubs. It was resolved that a medal bo engraved and presented to the Canterbury Club for the match won against the Caledonian Club. On the Timaru racecourscon Thursday s dispute arose over a totalisator ticket in connection with College Boy in the race for the District Plate. It appears (says the < M a il ’) a man on the course asserts that he took five tickets on No. 4 (College Boy), The horse won, and the money was paid out on him. The ticket named was presented, and the totalisator officials refused to pay on it, on the grounds that the ticket had been tampered with after time of insue. The investor insisted on his rights, and waited upon the stewards. A meeting was held on the course, and after taking a lot of evidence adjourned to last evening at the Grosvenor Hotel, where additional evidence was taken. The whole matter hingeson the question how

the 1 ‘ ticket ’’was written out. This, as apparently coming from the hand of Pearcy, the clerk, shows “Five on four” (in writing), whereas the block of the ticket book shows “5 on 2” (in figures). It was this discrepancy that decided the totalisator people not to honor the ticket. On closing the evidence the stewards decided to refer the written ticket to two expert lithographers in Christchurch to give an opinion as to whether an alteration has been made in the writing or not. If these experts decide that an alteration has not been made in the ticket after issue Goodwin will pay the money, which is a sum total of L3O odd. If tampering has taken place—if, for instance, the written “ two” has been altered to a “ four”—the money will not be paid, and the club will assist Messts Hobbs and Goodwin in taking any action it may be deemed necessary against the holder or the holders of the tickets.
