HOME RULE FOR IRELAND.
A crowded and enthusiastic meeting was held in the Christian Brothers’ Schoolroom last evening of sympathisers with the movement for Horae Rule for Ireland. On the motion of the Most Rev. Dr MORAN, the chair was taken hy Mr J. B. Callan, Dr Moran then moved that a subscription list be opened. He stated that in Ireland matters appeared now to bo approaching a ctiiis. On the one hand the present Government were straining every nerve to crush the movement; on the other the people were making a supreme effort to maintain the struggle. Signs were visible that the Irish people were fighting a winning battle, and that at the next election the English people would return a majority to support Mr Gladstone in his magnificent effort to do justice to Ireland, Mr Darling, who seconded the motion in an excellent speech, suggested the holding of a pub’ic meeting He stated that many of the people of Dunedin who were not Irishmen were ignorant of the aims of the Home Rule movement, and if the subject were only properly explained he believed that numbers would assist who at present were of opinion that it meant something revolutionary. The resolution was supported by Messrs Barclay, F. Meenan, J, Carroll, J. P. Armstrong, and others. A subscription list was then opened, and between LSO and L6O was subscribed in the room.
On the motion of Mr Carroll, seconded by Mr M'Alistkb, the following gentlemen were appointed a committee to collect further subset iptionsMessrs F, Meenan, Armstrong, Carroll, J, Liston, James Daly, John Fleming, and N. Smith, with power to add to their number. Mr F. Meenan was appointed treasurer, and Mr Perrin secretary. On the motion of Dr DE Zouohe, it was resolved that in future there should be an annual subscription in aid of the Home Rule funds, and the meeting then terminated. On the motion of Mr Armstrong, a vote of thanks was passed by acclamation to the chairman, who, in returning thanks, said he was authorised by the Rev. Mr Waddell to apologise for his unavoidable absence, and to put down his name on the subscription list.
