The Chinese “ bosses ” are trying to evade the effect of the quarantine regulations at Port Darwin by sending the steamers direct to Sydney. The Sydney Board of Health will, however, quarantine all steamers arriving there direct from China. A general election is on in Queensland. Sir Thomas MHlwraith, in his counter manifesto, declares for Protection, blames the maladministration of the land laws for the condition of tho colony’s finances, urges the strict exclusion of the Chinese, pronounces for Australian federation, but opposes the naval federation scheme of the Ministry.
