APPOINTMENT OF SCHOOL TEACHERS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Your note on “A Case for Inquiry,” which appeared in Monday’s STAR, meets with my entire concurrence, There is no disputing but that under the system which has been observed for so long a timo by the Education Board great injustice has been done to many experienced and duly-qualified teachers, who, when making application for appointments, have had, In nineteen cases out of twenty, to give way to their inferiors so far as teaching, experience, and educational status are concerned. The recent appointment of fourthassistant to the Milton District High School furnishes a noteworthy illustration in point. Here a young woman, who has just finished her apprenticeship, withHonly a partial E certificate, is appointed over the heads of a number of thoroughly experienced and fully certificated teachers. Is this as it should he? Does it not show that some wire-pulling has been carried on—probably by certain members of the School Committee on the one hand and certain members of the Education Board on the other? I was very much pleased that the affair was brought to light; but it was unfortunate that it was decided in the absence of a full board. I feel convinced if Mr John M'Kenzie had been in his accustomed seat the result would have been totally different; the amendment in favor of re-advertising the appointment would have been agreed to. Those members of the Milton School Committee who dissented from the course adopted in recommending an unccrtiSeated and inexperienced teacher over the heads of so many certificated and experienced teachers should attend personally and bring tho mattei under tho Board’s notice at Its ordinary monthly meeting on Thursday next.—l am, etc., Fair Play. Dunedin, March 13.
