ANGLO-JEWISH ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting" of the Otago branch was held at the Synagogue vestry rooms' yesterday, Rev. B. Lichtenstein in the chair.

The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, and thfe following officebearers elected for the' ensuing year:—president, Rev. B. Lichtenstein;' dent, Hon. S. E. Shrimski, M.L.C.; hori. secretary, Mr L; Mendelsohn; committee-* Messrs B. Hallenstein, J. Hyman, and/ M. Joel; auditor, Mr S. Jacobs. The report, read by the president, stated that the number of subscribers had increased from thirty-three last year to forty-eight this year, and that several appeals had been received during the year from the parent association urging the earnest co-opera-tion and assistance of all branches in furthering the good work of the society. "At present between 8,000 and 9,000 children in the East are being educated under the auspices of the French Alliance and the Anglo-Jewish Association. There are already forty-nine ordinary schools and twenty-four technical schools; and, though the inhabitants of the respective localities give what they can towards their maintenance, considerable amounts have to be contributed by the two parent societies', who ask for further help to assist the multitudes of Jewish children in barbarous countries who are still left without any provision for their education. ' This committee therefore appeal to the happy portion bf our race which possess most completely the benefits of civil and religious equality, and are enabled to fight the cause of that other and far more numerous portion of the race which are still in the same oppressed and suffering state as were our ancestors in the dark ages. The committee cannot conclude this report without devoting a few words of affectionate remembrance to the late Sir Barron Ellis, K.C.5.1., one of the vice-presi-dents of the association, who departed this life on 20th of Jane last.
