THE GOVERNMENT LABOR BUREAU.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, The Government Labor Bureau is closed, and the secretary ends the records with a grand flourish of praise. What I and many others are anxious to know, is: Where does the saving of thousands of pounds fit in ? [vide Mr Allan's last report). What about the L 70.000 frittered away in the village settlement experiment? which is, so far, a failure. The L 70.000 is gone, but gone where ? As to the work done, and who did it, it is well known that the Public Works Office bore the brunt of it. Perhaps the "thousands'' were saved through the Labor Bureau; but I need enlightenment as to ho if. The few people e&gaged, settlers could have got with the greatest ease through private offices, gaining money to the State in the shape of telegrams and stamps. I fear the whole affair must be entered up on the debtor side of tbe profit and loss account of the Colony. I may be wrong, and will feel thankful if any of your leaders will help me out of this fog.—l am, etc, TAXPAYER, Dunedin, January 16.
