VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
The Highland Rifles held the first of a series of competitions for the New Zealand Clothing Factory Company’s Champion Cup on Saturday. The following were the highest scores:—

The return match between the Tuapeka Rifle Volunteers and the Dunedin Highland Rifles was fired on Boxing Day at the Holyrood range, and resulted in a victory for the home team. The light was very variable, and a strong wind blowing across the range necessitated the men allowing about 3ft for wind at 300 yards and from 15ft to 16ft at 500 yards. Ranges—2oo, 300, and 500 yards; seven shots at each distance. The match was a very close one, and became very exciting towards the finish.
