IN THE TWILIGHT.

When the day bums out in crimson All along the western sky, , , When Night’s picket line of shadows .. Draw with stealthy footsteps nigh, Steals there softly to my chamber,. Little lass with eyes of blue;. And a sweet voice softly whispers: “ Can’t I say my prayers to you ?,”- Then she straightway kneels beside mie, Clasps her dainty hands in prayer, While the firelight’s crimson glory Turns to burnished gold her hate. “Kiss me first,” she softly murmurs, % > “ Then Til say them awful good." And two roguish eyes peer at me ; From beneath her tangled hood., Tenderly I bend to Idas her; > Press my lips on eyes and hair; “ Now,” she says, “papa, I’m, ready;Tou must listen to my prayqr.” j. , From a heart that knows no malioe Upward float the simple words, To the dear Ohrist-ohild that watches . O’er his children and the bhm ' listen to her childish whisper, “ Gentle Jesus, meek and mQd,” Soft and low the sweet petition, ' ' “Look upon a little diild.” ' Sinks her voice into a murmur, “ Pity my simplicity.” ;: r ’ ; Angels scarce can hoar the prayerful : 11 “Suffer me to oome toTuea;” «i ( . "Oh, fain n " ' Draoioos Lord, forbid it not—” n ff ; Falls the golden head still lower ' ■’ Of my sleepy littie tot . i-i . 1 Eyelids now are growing heavy,. “In thetingdomof Thydraoe, Hear, 0 Christ,” she faintly whispered; ■ “ Give a little child a place.” “ Amen ” follows, uttored qmcldy, •■-.1 . -i <yk<- „ As she starts np wideawake; , i Wraps her sunny robes aboutihsr, . i nl ; Gives her saucy head a shake. . ; '^^SiSsSSSkiifr Played too Hard; besides I’mflnUn*T Maybe Pod is tired to-night.” ;
