SMOTHERED IN A BOX.
BLENHEIM, December 24. Au inquest was held to-day on a child who was found smothered in a box. From tho evidence given by the mother—a single woman named.Jano Wholan—it seemed that twe children slept in a large box with the lid against the wall. There was nothing, however, to show that the lid of the box had fallen down, as tho elder child was all right, fho young one, who was smothered, was ten weeks old. It was found on its faco. The dootor thought it bad becrt in that position for four or five hours. The verdict was "Accidentally smothered," but the jury added a rider that great blame attached to tho mother for not having proper accommodation for her children to sleep in. _
