A four-roomed wooden dwelling, owned and occupied by Joseph Ellis, and situated atGaversham Rise, was burned down this morning about three o'clock. It appears that Mrs Ellis had been up ironing until one o'clock, and although a large fire had been used it had been allowed to die down, everything appearing all safe on Mrs Ellis retiring. Mr Ellis -was'awakened by the; sound of wood burning, and on getting up discovered the fire coming from underneath the mantelpiece. It is therefore assumed that a defeotive chimney has been the cause of the fire. The house, furniture, and effects, whioh were valued at L4OO, were insured in the New Zealand Office for L3OO. The piano, valued at L 45, was uninsured. The, Caversham Fire Brigade were quickly on; the spot, but the building was completely: destroyed on their arrival., '
