The Supplementary Estimates are not yet circulated, but I have been fortunate enough jtb secure an advance copy.- As'the Govern; ment proposals for retrenchment cannot 1 come into force till March 31, the whole of the Departmental votes have been underestimated and additional amounts are now asked for. The principal items are as follow : Colonial Secretary.—Destruction of scabby Bheep on Crown lands, LI ,000; remission of rent of infected runs, L 44 5; compensation to Dr Hacon (late superintendent Sunnyside Asylum) for loss of office, L 44 5; expenses of the Representation Committee, L 686; relief of Bufferers by the late floods at Greymouth, L 15 0; contribution in aid of the Imperial Institute, LI ,000; Melbourne Centennial Exhibition, L 3,500; maintenance of the Manawatu Gorge road and bridge, L 500; expenses of the Waitotara and Eastern Maori election petition, L 143. Colonial Treasurer.—Exchange and commission (additional), L 3,000. Other Departments.—Votes under-esti-mated in the Justice Department, L 3.411; including L 1.200 for the Lower Courts, L7OO for criminal prosecutions, LSOO for coroners, L3sofor gratuity to the widowof the late Captain Turnbull, L3B to the widow of the late Captain Tall, L2OO to G. M. Park in final settlement of his claims for extra services as telegraphist at Taupo. The sum of L 4,060 is required to carry on the Mines Department till March 31; Ll3O as compensation for goods destroyed by fire at the Dunedin goods-shed; L 169 to make good the defalcations of the late stationmaster at Waikouaiti; L 20.000 for the restoration of the General Post Office, Wellington ; LB,ooofor the Defence Department (under-estimated); L 164 as compensation to the widow of the late Constable Porter; L 164 to the widow of the late Lieu-tenant-colonel Lyon; Lands and Survey Departments (under-estimated), L 17.800; W. W. Dartnall, compensation for loss of office in the Works Department, L 532; roads to open up lands for sale, L 2,200; compensation to H. Atkinson for loss of office as mail agent, L 2,500. Under the head of Working Railways Department, the following items appear : Hurunui • Bluff section : Compassionate allowances and gratuities to widows, L 139 ; compassionate allowance and gratuities for injuries received while on duty, L 10 0; gratuities for long service, L 478.
