HARBOR BOARD RETRENCHMENT.

TO THE EDITOR. £ir,—lnterested friends of those who have received notice of their services not being further required no doubt do not approve of the course pursued by the Harbor Board. There can be no question, however, as to the correctness of the principle upon which the Board have proceeded—viz., to retain the "working bees' and pay them according to the results of their work, and dispense with those who, however highly they may think of themselves, have (it may be in some cases from force of habit) simply become incapable of doing their duty as it ought to be done. It uto bo hoped thot the Government will adopt a similar course—purge the Service and make it one that able men will be induced to aspire to, and not to a great extent, as it has been, the refuge for the lame, the halt, and the lazy friends of men of influence and power.—l am, etc., Spartan.
