THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION. BERLIN, October 6, (Received October 7, 1887, at 9.45 p.m.)

The proposition of Prince Bismarck to appoint a German Commissioner to the Melbourne Exhibition and render financial aid to German exhibitors thereat came up for consideration in the Federal Council to-day. The proposal was referred to a Select Committee. The members of the Council have not yet been informed of the views of their respective Cabinets on the matter.

The semi-official' North German Gazette' today, in an article upon the recent interview between Prince Bismarck and Signor Crispi, states that the result of the meeting has been that Italy and Germany, in con junction with Austria, have resolved to do their utmost to prevent a European war, and if necessary act together to avert the same. [Special to Press Association.] LONDON, October 6. (Received October 7.1887, at 7.41 p.m.) Shaw and Shrewsbury's London showrooms have been burnt down. An impression is abroad that Turkey is merely coquetting over the Russian proposals for the settlement of Bulgaria, and is unwilling to actively interfere. The Rev. Canon Camidge, Bishop-elect of Bathurst, sails by the Oroya. He has received many presents and valedictory addresses, The Thames Rowing Club gave a farewell banquet to Mr Fairbairn, the well-known Australian oarsman, who rowed for Cambridge in the last University boat race. He was presented with a ring as a memento of the occasion. Lord Lyttelton, presiding at the annual meeting of the Bank of Australasia, alluded to the many signs of improvement in the condition of Australia. The report was adopted. Mr J. Anderson is a passenger by the steamer Carthage to inspect the Bank of South Australia prior to succeeding Mr Cuthbertson. During Mr Anderson's absence Mr R. Jones will act as manager. October 7. (Reoeived October S, 1887, at 1.80 a.m.) Intelligence has been received from Rangoon that the camp of the rebel chief Boshway, in Upper Burmah, has been captured by the British forces, and the rebel leader killed. The French Government have decided upon forming an entrenched camp at Vitre. Five hundred of the worst convicts of France are to be deported to Cayenne, an island near the coast of French Guiana belonging to France. The tender of Messrs John Molem and Co. for the erection of the Imperial Institute has been accepted. The popularity of Prince Ferdinand in Bulgaria is increasing, and the Government expect an immense majority at the elections, which take place on Sunday next.

The Chinese Government have withdrawn the banking concession offered for the establishment of an American bank in China.

Count Munstor, German Ambassador at Paris, has concluded correspondence with the French authorities in connection with the recent shooting on the Franco-German frontier, and the result is satisfactory to France.

The Church Congress now sitting at Wolverhampton have had under discussion the duty of the Church towards assisted emigration.
