FIRE AT GREYMOUTH.

GREYMOUTH, September 1. About four o'clock this morning a fire broke out in Mackay street in the Masonic Hall, in which are the Greymouth Public Library and Reading-room and several offices. The fire spread rapidly through the building, and though the firemen were quickly on the scene, it was impossible to save the building. A very large proportion of the works cf the library were saved, but all the furniture and fittings of the institution were destroyed, and all the Masonic regalia and property of the Order were burnt. By dint of great exertions the fire was confined to the building. Mr Felix Campbell's wholesale store l had a narrow escape, and a great quantity of his stock wab removed. For a time the flying sparks made it very dangerous for all.the buildings round about, but' fortunately there was no wind. The Masonic Hall was insured for LSOO in the Equitable and for LSOO in the South British ; the reading-room, books, and furniture, for L2OO in the Standard; the Masonic regalia of the lodges and chapter, for Ll7O in the New Zealand; and thSrewas also LI3O on the furniture and L4O on the harmonium.
